Watanabe Seitei “Walking in Snow at Tokiwa”

Watanabe Seitei, active from the Meiji to the Taishō periods, was a pioneering figure in modern Japanese painting, known for his realistic style and translucent coloring. While he is best known for his flower-and-bird paintings, his depictions of women—studied under Kikuchi Yōsai—were also exceptional. Their gentle oval faces and slender eyes became so admired that they came to be known as “Seitei beauties.”

This work depicts Tokiwa Gozen, the wife of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, fleeing along a snowy path with her three children. The crimson robe, standing out against the snow-covered landscape, vividly underscores the harsh journey of the mother and her children. Seitei’s exceptional sense of color enhances the narrative, conveying the tension that lies beneath the elegance and resulting in a painting that fully encapsulates his distinctive aesthetic.
