Kurihara Gyokuyo, “Beauty”

Color on silk, illustrated in "Kurihara Gyokuyo: The Tragically Short-Lived Female Painter Born in Nagasaki" published by Nagasakibunkensha
131×41㎝ / 224×57㎝

Kurihara Gyokuyo was a Japanese painter born in Nagasaki in 1883. Although she gained recognition for her bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women), painted with a fresh and vibrant sensibility, she passed away at the young age of 40.
This work depicts a woman dressed in a splendid furisode kimono. Gyokuyo placed great importance on the overall harmony of the composition, particularly in her use of color. The black hair, obi, and geta (footwear) are rhythmically arranged to accentuate the vivid red of the furisode, while the gold-leaf floral patterns and intricate tie-dyeing further enhance its splendor. In contrast, the woman’s face appears strikingly cool and youthful. The falling cherry blossom petals reflect Gyokuyo’s delicate gaze, capturing the fleeting beauty of life, resulting in a truly exquisite piece.
