Suzuki Kiitsu “Hydrangea and Dragonfly”

Color on silk
109×50㎝ 225×65㎝

Suzuki Kiitsu was a painter active during the late Edo period. He studied under Sakai Hoitsu and inherited the Edo Rinpa style established by his master. Combining elegance with innovation, Kiitsu developed a distinctive artistic vision. The dynamic compositions and modern sense of color found in his work opened new horizons for the Rinpa school.

This painting depicts seasonal flowers, with large hydrangeas as its central motif. Rendered in Kiitsu's characteristic palette, the hydrangeas are vividly blue and refreshingly vibrant. A dragonfly resting on one of the petals evokes the arrival of early summer. The work beautifully embodies the unique aesthetic of the Rinpa school, transforming the simple beauty of nature into a refined decorative art.
