Shiba Kokan “Sima Guang Broke the Pot”

Color on silk
105×47㎝ / 208×63㎝

Shiba Kokan was a painter who was active during the late Edo period. He incorporated Western painting techniques, which were still rare at the time, and challenged himself to create diverse forms of expression from both the East and the West, including Japanese paintings, Western-style paintings, and oil paintings.
His greatest appeal lies in the contrast between the expressions born from his insatiable curiosity and his extremely realistic style.

This work depicts a didactic scene where a precious water pot is broken to save a child who has fallen into it. The child is rendered with incredibly delicate brushstrokes, reflecting the meticulous sketching techniques he learned from So Shiseki. The enormous pot exudes an unusual presence, boldly blending realism and narrative in this challenging piece full of Shiba Kokan's characteristic originality.
