Tanaka Isson “Kannon”

Color on paper, with a box signed and sealed by the artist, exhibited at “Tanaka Isson: Light and Soul” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
134×60㎝ / 219×77㎝

Tanaka Isson is a painter known for his vivid colors and unique worldview in depicting the nature of Amami Oshima Island. Isson moved to Amami Oshima Island in 1958, when he was about 50 years old. Until then, he was based in the Kanto region and worked on a variety of subjects, including Nanga, bird-and-flower painting, and landscape painting. It is said that he began painting Kannon after he fell seriously ill in his 30s around the time of the end of the war, and this work is thought to have been painted between 1940 and 1945.
In contrast to the rough brushstrokes of the rocks, the Kannon is depicted in a dignified form, giving the impression of a strength that transcends all hardships. This work conveys the solitary beauty of Tanaka Isson, who walked his own path throughout his life and became a brilliant figure in the history of Japanese art.
