WORK
OF THE MONTH

Ryokan “Calligraphy”

Small shikishi paper, with a box signed and sealed by Aizu Yaichi and Yasuda Yukihiko
18×17㎝ / 130×53㎝

Ryokan, one of the most famous Zen monks of the Edo period, still fascinates many people with his simple, free-spirited lifestyle. His innocence, free and rich state of mind are well expressed in his waka (poetry) and calligraphy. This work depicts the scenery where snow piling up on a solemn oak tree. The poetic contrast between the pure, fleeting snow and the strong, rooted tree shows how beautiful the world appeared to Ryokan. The free-flowing and familiar calligraphy is also an attractive feature of the work. In later years, Rosanjin commented on Ryokan’s calligraphy which embodies his personality, writing that it "combines truth, goodness, and beauty." It is a heart-warming work that is perfect for enjoying as winter approaches.
