Nagasawa Rosetsu “Sparrows on Magnolia Tree”

Nagasawa Rosetsu was a painter of the mid-Edo period who forged his own unique artistic realm with his exceptional observational skills and bold, humorous expression.

This work depicts two sparrows nestled among magnolias and roses. His technique of rendering the branches solely through nuanced brushwork, without relying on outlines, is both simple and breathtaking. The stillness of the magnolia buds, the tension of the rose thorns, and the sparrows’ innocent presence create a rich rhythm within the composition. This masterpiece is imbued with exceptional charm, vividly conveying Rosetsu’s pure affection for nature.
