Foujita Tsuguharu

Biography

1886~1968

Foujita Tsuguharu (1886-1968) was a Meiji to Showa period Western-style painter. He was born in Tokyo and, in moving to France, became well-acquainted with the likes of Picasso and Modigliani. He would often paint cats and women and his "milk-white skin" nudes, which appropriated Japanese painting techniques with oil painting, garnered much acclaim in Western art circles. He was a member of the Ecole de Paris and a receiver of the Medal of Region Doneur.
