Fukuda Toyoshiro

Biography

Fukuda Toyoshiro (1904-1970) was a Japanese painter of the Showa period. Born in Akita, he graduated from Kyoto Kaisen, and studied under Kawabata Ryushi and Tsuchida Bakusen. He formed the Yamaki-sha with Yoshioka Kenji and Komatsu Hitoshi, and the Shin Nihonga Kenkyu Kai with Yoshioka Kenji and Iwahashi Eien. In wartime, Toyoshiro went to China as a war painter. After returning to Japan, he worked as a lecturer at the Nihon University College of Art, and later founded the Sozo Bijutsu Artists Association, which merged into the Shin Seisaku Kyokai and became a prominent member. The artist is a recipient of the Mainichi Art Award.
