Biography |
Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) was a painter of the early to mid-Edo period. Born in Osaka. He studied painting under Kano Yasunobu and haiku under Matsuo Basho. He was an excellent Kano school painter and loved to paint Fuzoku-ga genre paintings. He was exiled to the island of Miyake-jima in 1698 and could not return until the death of the shogun, the fifth Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. Upon returning to Edo, the artist formally undertook the name Hanabusa Itcho. |
