Biography |
Maruki Iri (1901-1995) was a Japanese painter of the Showa period from Hiroshima. He studied under Tanaka Raisho, and later studied Japanese painting from Kawabata Ryushi and others as well. He participated in the founding of the Bijutsu Bunka Art Association in 1949. Immediately after the atomic bombing, he engaged in relief activities in Hiroshima and, from that experience, created "The Hiroshima Panels" series together with his wife Toshi. He is a recipient of the International Peace Prize and established the Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels in Higashimatsuyama City, Saitama prefecture. |
