Biography |
The Late Edo period painter, Nakamura Hochu was born in Kyoto, but lived in Osaka. He switched from Nanga to Rinpa painting, and painted figures and flowers. He was also a proficient haiku poet and interacted closely with Kimura Kenkado. Although Hochu is classified as a Rinpa school painter, he held a unique presence in the early modern Osaka art world with his amateurish and humorous expressions, which contrasted the generalized view of the Rinpa school’s extravagant and ornate aesthetic. |
