Takeuchi Seiho

Biography

1864-1942

Takeuchi Seiho is a Meiji to Showa period Japanese painter from Kyoto. He graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting and studied under Tsuchida Eirin and Kono Bairei. Initially, his pseudonym was 棲鳳, but, following his return from Europe, adopted the name 栖鳳 (Seiho). He is known for the modernization of Maruyama-Shijo school painting by introducing Western techniques. He continuously took part in the Kanten exhibitions (government sponsored exhibitions) throughout his entire career and he, alongside his rival, Yokoyama Taikan, were known as the two vanguards of painting. He nurtured the talents of artists within the painting circles in Kyoto and is a recipient of the prestigious Bunkakunsho (Order of Culture) award.
