Uragami Gyokudo

Biography

1745~1820

Uragami Gyokudo was a Nanga (Southern School Chinese painting) painter active during the end of the Edo period. While he served at the Okayama daimyo, he left at age 50 to travel and pursue art.
He wandered around various places in Japan with his koto (a Japanese instrument akin to a harp or zither). Upon these travels, he would meet many writers and would later settle in Kyoto.
Self-taught, his brushwork and landscapes are known for their unique rhythmic qualities. Paving way for a new style of literati painting, Gyokudo's work is internationally renowned for its innovation and incredible realism.
